Paris Goes Green & Gold: The Night the Packers Dethroned the Bears

The sun rose on a cold wet Paris morning. This one was different. And everyone knew why. The Green Bay Packers had dethroned the Chicago Bears. And all of Paris had witnessed it. Glorious it surely was. The Titletown EU crowd started on the Rive Droit at the Mazet. Maddie proved that wearing a cheesehead makes a mixed drink taste even sweeter. Who was at the bar? It was the former Cowboys fans who had shared the special playoff game with us two years earlier. An event so traumatic, so amazing, that the former Cowboys fans were now rooting for other teams. Who can blame them? I think they may have even asked about becoming NFL OWNERS… After burritos, pre-game drinks, and a few cheers for Aaron Rodgers in a Steelers uni, were off to the Moose. We met up with the rest of the Titletown crew and did the rounds, finding new fans. Some were based in Paris, but plenty of Green & Gold faithful tourists were there for the 10:25 pm kickoff.

Just then a terrible stench wafted past. What the heck? A camembert gone bad? An escargot Poutine? Even worse! Bears fans in the house! No worries, they wouldn’t be staying long. After all, how long could a shirtless Ben Johnson hold out on the sideline in 15 degree Lambeau field temps? Or maybe it was the play calling that was turning him red on the outside!

The Bears did try to make it a game but Caleb could only run so fast and so far, hounded as he was on every dropback. One last pass… INTERCEPTED by Nixon in the Endzone. Bears fans beat a hasty retreat into the cold night. Ben Johnson’s cold fingers clutched for the warmth of Matt Lafleur’s embrace. And we were off for a celebration round, back at Mazet.
